Bratislava is divided by the Danube River. On the north bank are the high-rise blocks built during the communist occupation (1968–1989). Nearby lies the beautifully restored historic Old Town (Stare Mesto), which is now largely dedicated to tourism.

Bratislava Old Town, mostly pedestrianized, is known for its charming Habsburg Baroque architecture, including many former palaces. Hlavne Square sits at its heart and contains the Old City Hall. The historic Michalska and Venturska streets lead past several important historical sites.

The town has a rich musical heritage and includes the childhood performance venues of Mozart and Franz Liszt. Enjoy a stroll along the pedestrian promenade that begins at the National Theatre and features statues, fountains, and cafés.
